Acute respiratory distress caused by gravel blocking the bronchial tree.

چکیده
A man riding a bike crashed against a bridge and fell into a river. He was rescued just before drowning. Chest radiography and CT scan showed gravel filling almost all his bronchial tree. Three hours were necessary to take out all the gravel by rigid bronchoscopy (Figs. 1 and 2). Fig. 1. Frontal CT scan showing gravel blocking the bronchial tree. Only the right upper bronchus lobe is free. Fig. 2. Endoscopic view showing one of the pieces of gravel.

Bronchial fistulae in ARDS patients: management with an extracorporeal lung assist device.
Patients with bronchial tree lesions feature, in particular, a high risk for developing bronchial fistulae after surgical repair when the clinical situation is complicated by acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and mechanical ventilation is needed. The current authors hypothesised that extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal would significantly decrease inspiratory ...
متن کاملBronchoscopic interventions with surfactant and recombinant human deoxyribonuclease for acute respiratory distress syndrome–type respiratory syncytial virus–pneumonia in moderately preterm infants: Case series
Atelectases, over-inflation of ventilated regions of the lung, and consecutive pneumothoraces are life-threatening conditions in mechanically ventilated infants with acute respiratory distress syndrome-type respiratory syncytial virus-pneumonia. The accumulation of viscous secretions secondary to impaired mucociliary clearance in the more proximal parts of the bronchial tree is the prerequisite...
متن کاملRhabdomyolysis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Multiple Wasp Stings
Background: Wasp stings usually cause local reactions such as itching, urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis. Life-threatening complications following multiple wasp stings are relatively rare and unexpected. However, rhabdomyolysis and acute respiratory distress syndrome following wasp stings are possible. Case presentation: A middle-aged male worker was stung by a swarm of wasps all over his b...
متن کاملIntestinal ischemia/reperfusion induces bronchial hyperreactivity and increases serum TNF-alpha in rats.
INTRODUCTION Intestinal or hepatic ischemia/reperfusion induces acute lung injury in animal models of multiple organ failure. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- alpha is involved in the underlying inflammatory mechanism of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Although the inflammatory cascade leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome has been extensively investigated, the mechanical components o...
متن کاملPulmonary hyperinflation and respiratory distress following solvent aspiration in a patient with asthma: expectoration of bronchial casts and clinical improvement with high-frequency chest wall oscillation.
An 18-year-old student with a history of asthma accidentally inhaled organic solvent during a class, with immediate cough and dyspnea that worsened over several hours. He presented in severe respiratory distress, with hypoxemia and marked pulmonary hyperinflation. Administration of inhaled bronchodilator was ineffective because of agitation, and the patient could not be positioned for chest phy...
